On Saturday, October 5th, as you have probably seen, Nemaha County and our First Responders were inundated with numerous calls, which included large fires that were hard to control and an accident that shut down a highway. While these are not uncommon call types for our center to handle, we believe our 2 dispatchers working a console that day deserve special recognition! In a 12 hour period those 2 dispatchers took 14 911 calls – 9 of which produced calls for service. They worked 4 active grass fires and coordinated and dispatched units from multiple disciplines with the help of the Nemaha County Emergency Manager! They also took calls and helped coordinate resources for 2 other calls in the Sabetha jurisdiction. Thank you to Sabetha dispatch as well for their hard work on this date. At one point every fire agency in this county was dispatched on fire calls. We want to say a huge thank you to all of these volunteer fire departments as well! Without their hard work, it could have been a very different outcome. Lastly, thank you to all the men and women who worked Saturday to keep our county safe, including all the different volunteers that came out and helped! We appreciate the effort of each and every one of you. ... See MoreSee Less

An aerial view of the aftermath of yesterday’s large fire near Woodlawn. As you can see, the fire spread through multiple tree lines and crossed a road. The fire also threatened multiple structures, all of which were spared destruction by fast responding fire agencies. The starting point of the fire was on the south end which is the farthest point away from the camera. Visible are the combine which ignited the blaze. The smoke from the fire was so intense that 36 Highway was shut down for part of the incident. During the early stages of this fire, all fire departments in Nemaha County were engaged in 1 or more fires as well as a vehicle accident. Departments from neighboring counties were called to help with various fires in Nemaha County. We are extremely fortunate that additional emergencies did not occur, as resources were stretched extremely thin through all of Nemaha and Western Brown County, north Jackson County, and southern Richardson County (Nebraska). Thanks again to all the men and women of our emergency services who responded yesterday, as well as neighbors and businesses who assisted. Conditions are still very dry, so please exercise extreme caution in any outdoor activities in the coming weeks. ... See MoreSee Less
